The 9 members of the Wu-Tang Killah Bees are seated a table for a feast; but this is not a feast of the body, it is a feast of the spirit & mind. The RZA perceives the potential of their collective ability, as the Wu-Tang symbol sparkles in his open eye.

Each member receives a flaming tongue above their head, symbolizing their inspired ability to spit fire with the spoken word. They are crowned with a halo in 24K gold leafing, a reference to Byzantine holy iconography. Each has a sacred heart, representing the collective 36 chambers. With the power of utterance is given the wisdom of silence; what will they say?

Personal note

A theme I particularly loved while creating this triptych is the relevance & symbolism of numbers:

9 members of the Wu-Tang Clan;

36 Chambers of 9 hearts;

6-sided honeycomb of the Wu-Tang Killa Bees

12 jewels of Islam & Israel (Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding, Freedom, Justice, Equality, Food, Clothing, Shelter, Love, Peace, Happiness)

And each member is representing one of the 9 deities in the Egyptian Ennead (ODB is obviously the Osiris of this sh*t).

You’ll see the RZA as both a Jesus and an Odin figure: he symbolically sacrifices an eye to learn the magic of The 9 Worlds. (The Wu-Tang symbol itself represents both the Holy Spirit and Odin’s raven). In Norse mythology, Odin drinks the Mead of Poetry, made of blood and honey, which gives him the power of spoken word. I like to imagine the Killer Bees are drinking this mead at the feast.

For me personally, as I’m one of 9 siblings from Staten Island (aka Shaolin), I think of this piece as a celebration of the magic of 9 individuals and their ability to overcome together in ways they couldn’t have alone.

The New Testament verse (Acts 2:2-4) that inspired this concept:

“And there appeared to them flames like tongues of fire distributed among them and coming to rest on each one.

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other tongues as the Spirit gave them the power of utterance.”
